Box-Office: OLD and SNAKE EYES Top Unremarkable Weekend

The box-office slowed down a bit over the weekend, and the two new releases, M. Night Shyamalan's "Old" and the G.I. Joe series reboot "Snake Eyes" scored modest numbers, while "Black Widow" and "Space Jam: A New Legacy" dropped substantially.

Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

Shyamalan's "Old" topped the weekend box-office with $16.5 million from 3,355 theaters. This is the lowest opening weekend in the filmmaker's career, a record previously held by "Lady in the Water" ($18 million in 2006). However, the film's saving grace is that it only cost $18 million to produce. It's also not a bad performance considering it's the first non-sequel to top the box office since "Wrath of Man" in May. "Old" also raked in another $6.5 million internationally.

In second place we find the newly released superhero reboot/prequel "Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins" with $13.4 million, a very modest debut compared to the $54.7 million opening weekend of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" (2009), and the $40.5 million debut of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" (2013). It grossed an additional $4 million internationally. The film's budget is estimated at around $80-$100 million, which at this point means the film is a pretty big flop. As many other recent blockbusters, this one is also awaiting a release date in China.

Disney's "Black Widow" landed in third place with $11.6 million, another 55% drop from last weekend. The film managed to cross the $150 million milestone both domestically and overseas, but it's still pacing behind "Ant-Man and the Wasp". Its worldwide total now stands at $315 million, as Disney desperately awaits the China release.

"Space Jam: A New Legacy" isn't faring too well, either, as the sequel was knocked from #1 to #4. The film grossed $9.6 million in its second weekend, a 69% drop from its opening weekend. The film has grossed a total of $51.3 million domestically and $42.6 million internationally.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "F9" with $4.7 million in its fifth weekend. The "Fast & Furious" sequel has raked in $163.3 million in North America and another $458.5 million overseas, which now adds up to a worldwide total of $622 million.
