The weekend didn't go as expected for Disney as the Marvel flick "Black Widow" took a steep nose-dive at the box-office, while the newly released live-action/animated hybrid sequel "Space Jam: The New Legacy" claimed the top spot.

A follow-up to the 1996 film "Space Jam", "The New Legacy" dominated the weekend box-office with $31.6 million from 3,965 theaters, while also being available free of charge to HBO Max subscribers. The original film opened with $27.5 million in 1996 and went on to gros $90.4 million domestically and $230 million worldwide. Overseas, "Space Jam: The New Legacy" grossed an additional $23 million for a worldwide total of $54.6 million.
Meanwhile, Disney's "Black Widow" dropped to second place with $25.8 million, a catastrophic 67.8% drop that ranks as the steepest second weekend drop ever for an MCU movie, an infamous record previously held by "Ant-Man and the Wasp" (-62%). Furthermore, while Disney released the Disney+ earnings for "Black Widow" in its opening weekend, this week the studio is keeping quiet about the streaming revenue. It's very likely that Disney+ views have also dropped considerably.
The film has grossed a total of $132 million domestically and another $100.7 million internationally, which brings its worldwide total to $232.7 million, a modest result by Marvel standards, especially since the film cost around $200 million to produce, and add to that the huge publicity costs caused by the numerous pandemic-related delays. What's worse is that China, the MCU's biggest market, has not yet set a release date for the film.
In third place we find another new release, the sequel "Escape Room: Tournament of Champions", which opened with $8.8 million from 2,815 theaters. It also raked in $4.5 million overseas from 18 countries. The first "Escape Room" opened in 2019 to 18.2 million and ended its theatrical run with $57 million domestically and $155.7 million worldwide.
"F9" finished in fourth place with 7.6 million after a 33% drop. The film has now grossed $154.8 million in North America and another $436.4 million overseas. That's $591.3 million grossed worldwide.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Universal's animated sequel "The Boss Baby: Family Business" with $4.7 million in its third weekend. The film dropped 46.8%. The new installment isn't doing so well, grossing only $44.6 million domestically and $3.7 million internationally. The first film, released in 2017, finished its theatrical run with $175 million in North America and a worldwide total of $527.9 million.
