Weekend Box-Office: F9 Scores Highest Opening Weekend of the Pandemic With $70 Million

It's been over a year since the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the theatrical experience and caused 2020's blockbusters to be delayed, but it seems that 2021's summer blockbuster season is back in full force ! The sequel "F9" scored a record-breaking weekend and all is right once more with the world.

"F9: The Fast Saga" finally opened in theaters, after it was originally set to be released over Memorial Day weekend in 2020. The sequel opened to $70 million from 4,179 venues, which is the most of any movie released in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, and even better than 2019's spinoff "Hobbs & Shaw", which opened with $60 million.

The previous record holder was "A Quiet Place Part II" ($47.5 million), which is still going strong, but more about that later. Meanwhile, "F9" has already grossed a massive $334.9 million, and that brings its worldwide cume to $404.9 million. The film will soon become the first film to overtake the $500 million milestone worldwide since "The Rise of Skywalker".

"A Quiet Place Part II" is holding in second place with $6.2 million, dropping 31.8%. The film has grossed a total of $136.4 million domestically and $112 million overseas, for a total of $248.5 million worldwide.

In third place we find the action comedy sequel "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" with $4.9 million in its second weekend. The film dropped a massive 57% from its opening weekend. Domestically, its tally has reached $25.9 million, while overseas it added another $5.5 million for a total of $31.4 million.

"Peter Rabbit 2" finished in fourth place with $4.9 million, as the sequel dropped 20.3% from the previous weekend. Its domestic cume has reached $28.9 million, while overseas it has raked in a total of $79 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Cruella" with $3.7 million, which brings its domestic cume to $71.3 million. Internationally, it has grossed a total of $112.5 million.
