The stage musical adaptation "In the Heights" was expected to deliver around $20 million over the weekend. Instead it raked in only $11.4 million from 3,456 theaters, finishing in second place. The film has not opened internationally yet.
Meanwhile, the hit horror sequel "A Quiet Place Part II") returned to the #1 position with $11.7 million in its third weekend in theaters. The film has grossed almost $109 million at the domestic box-office, becoming the first film to surpass the $100 million milestone since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Internationally its tally has reached $90 million, bringing its worldwide cume to $199.2 million.
Another sequel, the live-action amimation hybrid "Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway" opened in third place with $10.4 million from 3,346 theaters, well below the first film's $25 million debut. The film also grossed $57.9 million overseas, so far, for a worldwide total of $68.3 million.
Last week's #1 movie, "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" finished in fourth place with $10 million, dropping 58.4% from its opening weekend. The film has grossed a total of $43.8 million domestically, $68 million internationally, and $111.8 million globally.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney's "Cruella" with $6.7 million in its third weekend. The film's domestic tally has reached $56 million, while overseas it reached $73.3 million, which brings its global total to $129.3 million.
