The winners of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival have been announced. French filmmaker Julia Ducournau became the second-ever female director to win the Palme d'Or for the controversial body-horror thriller "Titane". The last female winner of the coveted award was Jane Campion in 1993 in a tie between her "The Piano" and Chen Kaige's "Farewell My Concubine".
Spike Lee accidentally announced the win ahead of time during the ceremony, but Ducournau did not collect her award until the formal announcement at the end of the ceremony.
Lee presided over a mostly female jury that included French-Senegalese actor-director Mati Diop, American actor-filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal, Austrian director Jessica Hausner, French actor-helmer Mélanie Laurent, Brazilian helmer Kleber Mendonça Filho, French actor Tahar Rahim, South Korean actor Song Kang-ho and cult French singer Mylene Farmer.
