The sequel to 2017's action comedy "The Hitman's Bodyguard" opened in theaters over the weekend and dominated a relatively modest weekend that followed the disappointing releases of "In the Heights" and "Peter Rabbit 2".

Read more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

Originally set for release on August 28, 2020, "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" finally opened in theaters on Wednesday to the tune of $17 million from 3,331 theaters, of which $11.7 million over the weekend. The first film opened with $21.4 million. The sequel's modest debut will prove especially problematic when "F9" opens next-weekend, considerably cutting into its earning potential.

"A Quiet Place Part II" finished in second place with $9.4 million, dropping only 21.7%. The film has now grossed a total of $125 million domestically and $96.7 million internationally.

In third place we find "Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway" with $6.1 million, a 40% drop from its opening weekend. The film has reached a domestic total of $20.3 million, while overseas it has raked in $70.5 million.

The horror film "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" finished in fourth place with $5.2 million, a 50% drop from last weekend, and its domestic total is now at $53.6 million in its third weekend. Internationally, the film's tally has reached $89.2 million.

The top 5 is rounded out by Disney's "Cruella" with $5.1 million. The film only dropped 24.3%, and it has already grossed over $60 million domestically, with another $95.2 million overseas.

Meanwhile the musical "In the Heights" continues to be a major disappointment for Warner Bros. In spite of a strong marketing campaign, the film scored a poor opening, and an even worse second weekend, dropping 63% to $4.2 million for a sixth-place finish. And so, after 10 days, the film's domestic gross is only $19.7 million.
