Weekend Box Office: ZOOTOPIA 2 Conquers Thanksgiving Holiday Frame

Weekend Box Office Zootopia 2

Disney dominated the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with the animated sequel "Zootopia 2", which overperformed and crushed the competition both domestically and worldwide with the second biggest Thanksgiving opening ever. Even "Wicked: For Good" took a steeper tumble than expected in its sophomore frame. Meanwhile, the fantasy romantic comedy "Eternity" failed to find its audience.

Disney's "Zootopia 2" opened in first place with $100.2 million over the 3-day weekend, and a total of $158.8 million for the entire 5-day holiday. This is the second-best Thanksgiving debut, behind only "Moana 2" ($139.7 million 3-day). The original "Zootopia" opened with $75 million in 2016. Internationally, it's doing even better with a total of $401.5 million, with over $271 million alone from China. It all adds up to a spectacular $560.3 million global debut against a $150 million production budget. The film has received a very positive reception from both critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

"Wicked: For Good" finished its second weekend in second place with $61.7 million, which is a steep 58% decline. Last year, "Wicked" grossed $81.1 million and only dropped 28% in its second weekend. The film has now grossed $269.2 million domestically and another $121.8 million internationally, for a total of $391 million worldwide against a $150 million budget.

The threequel "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" dropped from #2 to #3 in its third weekend, grossing $6.9 million, down 22.9%. The domestic total has reached $49.6 million, while overseas it adds another $137.3 million for a worldwide total of $186.9 million against a $90 million budget.

"Predator: Badlands" also slowed down its decline, finishing its fourth weekend in theaters with $4.8 million, a 26.5% drop from last week. The film has now grossed $85 million in North America, and $89.3 million from foreign markets. That's a global cume of $174.4 million against a $105 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "The Running Man" with $3.7 million, down 35.1%. The film's domestic tally has reached $34.2 million, while overseas it adds another $26.3 million for a worldwide total of $60.5 million. Due to its hefty $110 million budget, the film is a considerable flop for Paramount.

The rom-com "Eternity" starring Elizabeth Olsen, Miles Teller and Callum Turner opened in sixth place with a weak $3.1 million 3-day from 1,348 theaters. For the 5-day extended weekend, the film grossed $5.2 million. The film received mostly positive reviews from critics (77% on Rotten Tomatoes).

In other news, Focus released Chloe Zhao's "Hamnet" in 119 theaters over the holiday weekend. The film grossed $932,278 for the 3-day and $1.3 million for the 5-day.
