Madelaine Petsch ("The Strangers", "Riverdale") and Gavin Casalegno ("The Summer I Turned Pretty") have signed on to star in "Chasing Red", an adaptation of the Wattpad young adult romance written by Isabelle Ronin. Filming is expected to begin next year, with Mackenzie Munro ("Boot Camp") directing from a screenplay by Lauren Schacher ("Hooking Up").
The story follows straight-A student Veronica (Petsch), who refuses to be college heartthrob Caleb's (Casalegno) next "conquest", even after a chance encounter sparks an undeniable attraction between them. On the run from a painful past and with nowhere to go, Veronica ends up under Caleb's roof. As their chemistry turns electric and secrets unravel, love and betrayal collide in this addictive, slow-burn romance.
The film is produced by Greg Silverman and Grant Torre of Stampede Ventures ("Motor City") and David Madden and Jason Goldberg of Webtoon Productions (the "After" franchise).
Stampede Ventures' founder and CEO Greg Silverman said the following in a statement: "Mackenzie brings such an elevated, romantic vision to Isabelle Ronin's captivating love story that developed an astounding following on Wattpad, and Madelaine and Gavin are the perfect actors to finally bring Veronica and Caleb's story to audiences around the world".
Mister Smith Entertainment's senior vice president of international sales & acquisitions Shane Kelly added: "With compelling romance, high emotional stakes, and a massive built-in fanbase, this is a surefire opportunity for international buyers looking to tap into the same global audience that propelled franchises like 'After'".
Wattpad is the online publisher of Anna Todd's "After" series, which was adapted into a five-film franchise that grossed $168 million worldwide. "Chasing Red" is the platform's second most-read English-language title, with 261 million online reads. The story has been adapted into a Webtoon webcomic with 24 million views and published as both a print novel by Sourcebooks and a graphic novel by Webtoon Unscrolled.
Mister Smith Entertainment is handling international sales for the project and has closed deals for much of the world, with Amazon Prime Video taking the film for the U.K., Canada, Australia/New Zealand, France and Benelux; Capelight acquiring Germany; Leone Film Group taking Italian rights; Sun/Diamond handling Latin America, Spain, Portugal and South Africa; and Svensk taking the film for Scandinavia among other deals.
Petsch recently wrapped Killer Films' "Pretty Babies" directed by Tyler-Marie Evans. Casalegno will next appear alongside Kathryn Newton and Lana Condor in the thriller "The Devil's Mouth" directed by Jeff Wadlow.
