Weekend Box-Office: WICKED FOR GOOD Scores Record-Breaking $147 Million Debut

Weekend Box Office Wicked For Good

The sequel "Wicked: For Good" soared over the weekend with a record-breaking box office debut that was pretty much devastating for all the other contenders, including newcomers "Rental Family" and "Sisu: Road to Revenge", which failed to attract moviegoers. The upcoming Thanksgiving frame will add Disney's "Zootopia 2" into the mix, which will make for a pretty interesting weekend at the box office.

"Wicked: For Good" opened in first place with $147 million from 4,115 theaters, a major upgrade from the first film's $112.5 million opening weekend. The sequel has officially broken the record for biggest opening weekend for a Broadway adaptation, and it's also the third highest opening for a musical ever, behind 2019's "The Lion King" ($191.7 million) and 2017's "Beauty and the Beast" ($174.75 million). It also ranks as the second-highest opening weekend of 2025, behind only "A Minecraft Movie" ($162.7 million).

The musical sequel didn't do so well overseas, grossing only $76 million from 78 countries, although the first film only grossed $50.2 million in its international debut. Overall, the film scored a $223 million worldwide debut against a budget of around $150 million. It received a mixed-to-positive reception from critics (69% on Rotten Tomatoes), while the audience reception was mostly positive ("A" CinemaScore).

The sequel "Now You See Me: Now You Don't" dropped to second place with $8.9 million, a 57.4% decline from its debut. The film has now grossed a total of $36.6 million domestically and another $109.4 million internationally, which adds up to $146 million worldwide against a $90 million budget.

"Predator: Badlands" is holding in third place with $6.5 million in its third weekend, which is a 48.5% decline from the previous frame. The film's domestic tally is now at $76.5 million, while overseas it adds another $83.6 million for a global cume of $160.2 million against a $105 million production budget.

After a terrible debut last weekend, "The Running Man" continues its catastrophic theatrical run with a 65.3% drop in its sophomore weekend. The film finished in fourth place with $5.7 million, which brings its domestic total to $26.9 million. Internationally, it adds another $21.3 million for a worldwide total of $48.2 million against a production budget estimated at around $110 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the dramedy "Rental Family" starring Brendan Fraser, which only grossed $3.3 million from 1,925 theaters. The film has received a positive reception from both critics (86% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).

The action sequel "Sisu: Road to Revenge" opened in sixth place with $2.4 million from 2,222 theaters. The first film was released by Lionsgate and opened with $3.3 million in April 2023. It went on to gross $7.2 million. Overseas, the sequel added another $3.3 million. The production budget is estimated at around $12.2 million. The critical reception was overwhelmingly positive (96% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
