The summer movie season is over, but that doesn't mean the box office is dead. On the contrary. The September 12-14 weekend was very busy and crowded with four new releases and a few re-releases. "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle" dominated with a record-breaking North American debut, while "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" and the Stephen King adaptation "The Long Walk" scored modest openings, and the mockumentary sequel "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" barely made the Top 10.

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle" opened with $70.6 million from 3,315 theaters, breaking the record for biggest anime opening ever, which was previously held by "Pokemon: The First Movie" with $31 million in 1999. It's also the highest grossing 2025 release in Japan, and the second biggest release in the country's history. With $282.9 million internationally, the film has now grossed $353.5 million worldwide against a $20 million budget. "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - Infinity Castle" has received a positive reception from both critics (98% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
Last week's #1 movie, the horror sequel "The Conjuring: Last Rites" dropped to second place with $25.6 million, a massive 69.5% drop from its opening weekend. Regardless, the film is already a hit with $130.5 million domestically and another $202.1 million internationally. That's a total of $332.6 million worldwide against a $55 million production budget.
"Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" opened in third place with $18.1 million from 3,694 theaters, which is pretty much in line with the previous installment, "A New Era", which opened with $16 million in 2022, while the first film scored a $31 million opening weekend in 2019. Overseas, the film adds another $12.3 million for a worldwide total of $30.4 million against a $50 million production budget. "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale " was well-received by critics (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences ("A" CinemaScore).
Next up is the dystopian survival thriller "The Long Walk", which made its debut in fourth place with $11.7 million from 2,845 theaters against a $20 million budget. Critics liked the film (89% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the 2025 re-release of "Toy Story", which opened with $3.4 million from 2,375 theaters.
"Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" proved to be something of a disappointment, opening with only $1.6 million at #9 from 1,920 theaters, which means it might end up grossing less than the original "This is Spinal Tap", which raked in $5.8 million in 1984 ($18 million adjusted for inflation). The sequel received mixed reviews from critics (66% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers mostly enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
