Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright ("The Batman") and Oscar winner Octavia Spencer ("The Help") have signed on to star in Focus Features and Amblin's upcoming adaptation of Arthur Miller's 1949 stage play "Death of a Salesman". The film will be directed by Chinonye Chukwu ("Till", "Clemency") from a script co-written by Chukwu and Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner ("Munich", "Lincoln", "The Fablemans").
The play depicts the final days of Willy Loman, an aging salesman whose life disintegrates due to financial struggles, the failure to achieve his distorted American Dream, and the breakdown of his family relationships. Wright will play Willy Loman while Spencer will portray the wife, Linda Loman.
The Pulitzer Prize winning two-act play first premiered on Broadway in February 1949 and ran for 742 performances. It won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, and has been adapted many times for both the small and big screen, including the 1951 film starring Frederic March, which was nominated for five Academy Awards.
Producers are Cindy Tolan and Kristie Macosko Krieger via Amblin Entertainment and Spencer via Orit Entertainment. Tony Kushner will also serve as a producer.
