Warner Bros once again dominated the box office with the latest and supposedly final chapter in the supernatural horror franchise "The Conjuring", which became the studio's seventh consecutive release to open above $40 million. Of course, this left the competition scrambling for scraps, but the 2025 re-release of the musical "Hamilton" still managed to score a second place debut. The faith-based animated film "Light of the World", on the other hand, barely made the Top 10.

"The Conjuring: Last Rites" performed a lot better than expected and topped the charts with $84 million from 3,802 theaters, the biggest opening for a Conjuring movie and the fourth-highest September opening of all time. The first film opened with $41.8 million in 2013, the second scored a $40.4 million debut in 2016, while the third, "The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It" scored a franchise-low opening weekend of $24.1 million, mostly due to its pandemic day-and-date release in theaters and on HBO Max.
For Warner Bros, the film joins a record-breaking string of hits that includes "A Minecraft Movie", "Sinners", "Final Destination: Bloodlines", "F1: The Movie", "Superman" and "Weapons". WB is now the first studio to have seven consecutive movies opening with more than $40 million in the past decade.
Overseas, "The Conjuring: Last Rites" scored another $110 million for a worldwide total of $194 million, and it only cost $55 million to produce. The film received mixed reviews from critics (57% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B" CinemaScore).
Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton" is back in theaters and secured a second-place debut with $10.1 million from 1,825 theaters.
Warner's other hit "Weapons" finished its fifth weekend in third place with $5.2 million, down 50.1% from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $142.9 million domestically and another $108.3 million internationally. That's a worldwide cume of $251.2 million.
Disney's sequel "Freakier Friday" is holding in fourth place with $3.8 million, a 42.9% decline in its fifth weekend. The film's domestic tally has reached $87.8 million, while overseas it adds another $55.1 million for a global total of $142.9 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Darren Aronofosky's "Caught Stealing" with $3.2 million, a steep 59.2% drop from it's lacklustre debut. The film has now grossed $12.8 million in North America and $9.4 million overseas.
In other news, the Christian drama "Light of the World" opened in ninth place with $2.4 million from 2,075 theaters against a $20 million budget.
