Weekend Box Office: WEAPONS Returns to No. 1 While JAWS Re-Release Takes a Bite Out of Newcomers CAUGHT STEALING and THE ROSES

Weekend Box Office Weapons Jaws Rerelease

The 2025 summer season closed out with horror film "Weapons" back in first place at the box office over the Labor Day weekend. The 50th anniversary re-release of Steven Spielberg's iconic "Jaws" followed close behind while also scaring off new arrivals "Caught Stealing" and "The Roses", which underperformed. Meanwhile, the remake of the Troma classic "The Toxic Avenger" failed to make the Top 10.

"Weapons" is back on top with $10.4 million, down just 32.1% from the previous frame, while its 4-day weekend added up to $12.8 million. The film has now grossed a total of $134.9 million domestically and another $100.2 million overseas, which brings its global tally to $235.1 million against a $38 million budget.

"Jaws" returned to theaters for its 50th anniversary and finished in second place with $8.1 million from 3,200 theaters, including $2.2 million from 400 IMAX screens, and a $9.8 million 4-day total. The film's domestic lifetime total now sits at $280.3 million. Worldwide it has grossed $491 million.

Darren Aronofsky's crime thriller "Caught Stealing" opened in third place with a disappointing $7.8 million from 3,578 theaters for the 3-day, and $9.5 million for the 4-day against a $40 million budget. Another weak performance for the film's star Austin Butler following "Eddington", and last year's "The Bikeriders". The film also raked in another $5.4 million overseas. "Caught Stealing" received positive reviews from critics, but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).

Disney's "Freakier Friday" dropped to fourth place with $6.6 million, a 25.8% decline from last week. The sequel has now grossed $82.2 million in North America, and another $50.4 million from international markets. That adds up to $132.6 million worldwide against a $45 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by another new release, the satirical dark comedy "The Roses", a remake of the 1989 film "The War of the Roses", which opened with a modest $6.2 million from 2,700 theaters. It raked in $8 million for the 4-day. The original film, which starred Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, opened with $9.4 million, which would amount to $25 million in 2025 after adjusting for inflation. The remake also adds $9.2 million from international markets for a $17.2 million worldwide debut against a $20 million production budget. Both the critical and audience reception was mostly mixed (66% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaScore).

In other news, the Troma remake "The Toxic Avenger" starring Peter Dinklage opened outside the Top 10 with $1.7 million from 1,995 theaters, and $2.1 million for the 4-day weekend.
