Weekend Box-Office: DEMON SLAYER INFINITY CASTLE Becomes Highest-Grossing Japanese Film Of All Time While Horror Film HIM Fumbles Debut

Weekend Box Office Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba Infinity Castle Higehst Grossing Japanese Film Of All Time

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle" continued to dominate the box office while new releases underperformed. The horror film "Him", the fantasy romance "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey" and the biographical sports drama "The Senior" all failed to impress, while the Japanese anime continues to break records.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie - Infinity Castle" topped the charts in its sophomore weekend with $17.3 million. Despite the steep 75.5% drop, it's still an impressive performance, as most anime films rarely get to stay a second weekend in the Top 10, dropping as much as 80%-85% with much lower opening weekends. The film has now grossed $104.7 million in North America, surprassing animated films like "The Bad Guys 2" ($80.3 million) and "Elio" ($72.9 million). With another $450.2 million from overseas markets, the film has raked in a total of $555 million worldwide (surpassing the $519.4 million grossed by "The Fantastic Four: First Steps"), making it the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. And it only cost $20 million to produce.

The Jordan Peele-produced horror film "Him" opened in second place with $13.2 million from 3,168 theaters. Its international debut was a disaster, grossing only $258,000 from 25 countries. The film received a negative reception from both critics (29% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("C-" CinemaScore). Even with a low $27 million budget, it still looks like this movie will lose money for Universal.

In third place we find the horror sequel "The Conjuring: Last Rites" with $12.2 million, down 52.1% from last week. The film has now grossed a total of $150.5 million domestically and another $249.5 million internationally, which adds up to $400 million worldwide against a $55 million budget.

"Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale" finished its second weekend in fourth place with $6.4 million, a 64.6% decline despite adding another 17 screens. The film's domestic total has reached $31.7 million, while overseas it adds another $27.7 million for a global tally of $59.4 million against a $50 million production budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the Stephen King adaptation "The Long Walk" with $6.2 million in its sophomore frame, a 46.8% decline from its opening weekend. The film has now raked in $22.6 million in North America, and another $2.8 million from foreign markets for a $25.4 million global cume. The film only cost $20 million to make.

The romantic fantasy film "A Big Bold Beautiful Journey" starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell tanked in sixth place with $3.2 million from 3,330 theaters. Overseas it only raked in $4.5 million. This is Robbie's worst opening weekend since 2022's "Babylon" ($3.6 million). The film received negative reviews from critics (36% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was lukewarm ("B-" CinemaScore).

The sports biopic "The Senior" opened in seventh place with an underwhelming $2.6 million from 2,405 theaters against a $10 million production budget. The film enjoyed a positive reception from both critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoe) and audiences ("A" CinemaScore).

In other news, the religious musical "Sight & Sound Presents: NOAH Live" opened in ninth place with $1.3 million from 933 theaters.
