A third season of HBO's drama series "Big Little Lies" is officially in the works. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" co-creator Francesca Sloane has boarded the project to write the first episode and executive produce the new season. Sloane will executive produce along with David E. Kelley, Nicole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon.
Kidman and Witherspoon will return to lead the cast. Sloane has signed a two-year overall deal at HBO. Kidman revealed as far back as 2023 that a third season could be happening, but nothing had been officially confirmed until now.
"Big Little Lies" first aired in 2017 as a limited series based on the novel of the same name by Liane Moriarty, but due to its huge success, including winning 8 Emmys, HBO announced that the show would return for a second season. The cast also included Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Jeffrey Nordling, with Meryl Streep joining the ensemble in Season 2.
A sequel novel is due to be published in 2026. Meanwhile, it was recently announced that filming on "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" Season 2 at Amazon Prime Video had been delayed indefinitely.
