"Barbarian" filmmaker Zach Cregger's new horror film "Weapons" dominated the box office over the weekend, scoring another big win in 2025 for both the genre and Warner Bros. Meanwhile, Disney's sequel "Freakier Friday" starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis followed in second place but with a much more modest performance. Also, the fantasy horror comedy "Sketch" expanded nationwide and barely made it into the Top 10.

"Weapons" opened in first place with $43.5 million from 3,202 theaters. That's more than the entire theatrical run of director Zach Cregger's "Barbarian" ($40.8 million). The film also added another $28.3 million from overseas markets for a worldwide debut of $71.8 million against a budget estimated at around $38 million. The film enjoyed a positive reception from both critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).
Disney's sequel "Freakier Friday" made its debut in second place with $28.5 million from 3,975 theaters. The first film opened with $22.2 million in 2003, which would amount to around $38.7 million today adjusted for inflation. The new installment also raked in $15.2 million internationally, which adds up to a worldwide total of $43.8 million against a $42 million budget. The critical reception was mixed-to-positive (73% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
The Marvel movie "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" finished its third weekend in third place with $15.7 million, which is a very steep 59.2% decline from its sophomore frame. The film has now grossed $230.6 million in North America and $204.6 million from foreign markets. That's a total of $435.3 million worldwide.
In fourth place we find the animated sequel "The Bad Guys 2", which grossed $10.5 million in its sophomore weekend, down 51.8%. The film grossed a total of $43.6 million domestically and another $40.7 million internationally, which brings the worldwide tally to $84.3 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the spoof comedy reboot/sequel "The Naked Gun" with $8.3 million in its second frame. The film dropped 50.6% from its debut and has now raked in $32.9 million domestically. With another $23.4 million from foreign markets, the film has now grossed $56.3 million worldwide.
Angel Studios' "Sketch" made its wide debut in tenth place with $2.4 million from 2,157 screens. The film opened in limited release on August 6th, and grossed a total of $4.9 million, so far. "Sketch" was a hit with both critics (97% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).
