Mel Gibson's THE RESURRECTON OF THE CHRIST Split Into Two Movies and Slated For Release In 2027

The Resurrection Of The Christ Mel Gibson Two Movies 2027

Mel Gibson's highly anticipated "The Resurrection of the Christ", the follow up to the actor/filmmaker's 2004 hit "The Passion of the Christ", will be split into two parts and will be released by Lionsgate in 2027. Part One will release on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, while Part Two will hit theaters 40 days later on Ascension Day, Thursday, May 6, 2027.

No plot details are available at the moment. Both of the new films will be produced by Gibson and his Icon Productions partner Bruce Davey. Jim Caviezel is expected to return as Jesus, as is Monica Bellucci, who played Mary Magdalene in the first film. Although "The Passion of the Christ" was released by Newmarket Films, Lionsgate will handle the release of "The Resurrection of the Christ".

The original film held the record as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time domestically ($370 million) right up until last year when it was dethroned by "Deadpool & Wolverine" ($636.7 million). "The Passion of the Christ" went on to gross $610 million worldwide against a $30 million production budget, and also received three Oscar nominations for Best Makeup, Cinematography and Original Score.
