Jon M. Chu to Direct HOT WHEELS Live-Action Movie for Warner Bros & Mattel

Jon M Chu Hot Wheels Live Action Movie

"Wicked" and "Crazy Rich Asians" filmmaker Jon M. Chu has signed on to direct Warner Bros' "Hot Wheels" live-action movie based on the Mattel toy line. The script is penned by Juel Taylor ("Creed II") and Tony Rettenmaier ("Space Jam: A New Legacy"). According to the studio, the film will be a high-octane action film that will showcase some of the world's hottest and sleekest vehicles.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. Cashing in on the "Barbie" movie craze, Mattel also has other big screen projects in the works based on their toys including Barney, Polly Pocket, the card game Uno and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots.

In a statement, Chu said the following: "Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed — it's about imagination, connection, and the thrill of play. Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I'm excited to create an adventure that honors Hot Wheels' legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new."

Mattel Studios president and chief content officer Robbie Brenner added: "Jon's ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life. His films are visual spectacles — true eye candy — but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames."

The film is produced by J.J. Abrams' company Bad Robot Productions and Chu's Electric Somewhere.

Chu is also set to direct a Play Doh animated film, a Britney Spears biopic, an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book "Oh, the Places You'll Go" and the musical adaptation "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".
