Weekend Box-Office: DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Highest-Grossing R-Rated Film of All Time After Massive Second Weekend

Weekend Box Office Deadpool Wolverine Highest Grossing R Rated Movie Of All Time

"Deadpool & Wolverine" continues its fantastic theatrical run with an impressive second weekend that helped the film break a new record, while Disney succeeded in crossing the $3 billion mark for 2024. Meanwhile, M. Night Shyamalan's new film "Trap" failed to impress, and the family-friendly fantasy film "Harold and the Purple Crayon" bombed.

"Deadpool & Wolverine" conquered its second weekend with $96.8 million, a soft 54.2% decline compared to the usual 60-70% superhero movie drops. This is the 8th highest second weekend of all-time. With $395.3 million domestically, the sequel has become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, surpassing 2004's "The Passion of the Christ" (370.7 million). Overseas, the film earned another $428.7 million, which brings the worldwide total to $824.1 million after only 10 days in theaters, surpassing both previous "Deadpool" movies and all the "X-Men" movies.

The disaster epic "Twisters" is holding in second place with $22.8 million in its third weekend. The film's domestic total has reached $195.7 million, but overseas the film is struggling with $79.1 million. The worldwide total is now at $274.8 million.

M. Night Shyamalan's "Trap" opened in third place with a modest $15.4 million from 3,181 theaters, while overseas it raked in another $4.6 million. It's on par with the director's "Old" ($16.8 million debut) and "Knock at the Cabin" ($14.1 million opening weekend), but it's still a weak start, especially considering those movies were cheaper to make. Even though the self-funded thriller only cost $30 million to produce, it still needs around $60 million to break even. The film was not screened for critics, which in itself was a bad sign, and it turns out that the film received a negative reception from both critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("C+" CinemaScore).

"Despicable Me 4" finished in fourth place with $11.4 million, down 21.5% in its fifth weekend, which brings its domestic total to $314.1 million. Overseas it adds another $440.2 million, for a worldwide total of $754.6 million. It is now the third highest grossing film of the year, and the second-most profitable film of the year.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Inside Out 2" with $6.8 million. The film dopped just 21% in its eight weekend, and has now grossed a total of $626.9 million in North America and $929.3 million from foreign markets. The worldwide cume now stands at $1.5 billion.

In other news, "Harold and the Purple Crayon" tankeed in sixth place with $6 million from 3,325 theaters, against a budget of $40 million. Internationally it raked in another $3 million for a worldwide total of $9 million. The film received terrible reviews from critics (27% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers enjoyed it ("A-" CinemaScore).
