"Aquaman" and "The Conjuring" helmer James Wan is developing a remake of the classic 1954 monster horror film "Creature from the Black Lagoon". Wan is also in early negotiations to direct for Universal Pictures. The original film was directed by Jack Arnold and starring Richard Carlson and Julia Adams.
The project has been described as a "grounded modernized retelling that leans into visceral horror whilst paying respect to the original classic". The original story revolved around a group of scientists who encounter a prehistoric monster in the Amazonian waters. The film will be produced by Wan's production company Atomic Monster, which recently merged with Jason Blum's "Blumhouse".
Over the years, several directors including Guillermo del Toro have tried to reboot the black-and-white monster movie, but this is the first time a project is moving forward. The remake is Universal's latest attempt at adapting its catalog of classic monsters for the big screen.
Atomic Monster's Michael Clear and Judson Scott will serve as executive producers. Universal's executive VP of production development Jay Polidoro will oversee for the studio.
