The casting process for the second season of "The Last of Us" is underway and today it was announced that Kaitlyn Dever and Isabela Merced have signed on for the new season. Young Mazino ("Beef") also joined the cast recently.
Dever joins the show as Abby, who is decribed as "a skilled soldier whose black-and-white view of the world is challenged as she seeks vengeance for those she loved". Merced will play Dina, a "warm, brilliant, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly lovable" character, according to co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Mazino will appear as Jesse, said to be "a pillar of his community who puts everyone else’s needs before his own, sometimes at terrible cost".
"The Last of Us" is based on the hit video game of the same name created by Druckmann and developed by Naughty Dog. The series is written and executive produced by Mazin and Druckmann. Both have also directed episodes of the show. The series is a co-production between HBO and Sony Pictures Television. PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog produce.
The series has already received three Golden Globe nominations as well as 25 Emmy nominations for its first season. While the Primetime Emmy Awards are due to take place on January 15, the show has already won eight Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys.
