Dwayne Johnson to Play MMA Fighter Mark Kerr in Benny Safdie's THE SMASHING MACHINE

Dwayne Johnson is set to take on hist most dramatic role yet in A24's upcoming biopic "The Smashing Machine". The film, which chronicles the story of MMA and UFC champion Mark Kerr, marks Benny Safdie's solo directorial debut. Safdie is best known for co-directing the crime thrillers "Uncut Gems" and "Good Time" alongside his brother Josh.

The film is a drama that follows Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds-barred era of the UFC at the peak of his career, as he struggles with addiction, winning, love and friendship in the year 2000.

Kerr was a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion and World Vale Tudo Championship tournament winner. Over the course of his career, he won over two dozen MMA titles. In 2003, Kerr was the subject of an HBO documentary, also titled "The Smashing Machine".

Johnson will also produce alongside Safdie, Dany Garcia, Eli Bush and David Koplan. Safdie and Johnson have collaborated on this project ever since Johnson first acquired the rights in 2019. A24 in on board as producer and financier.

Noah Sacco of A24 said the following: "Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life.".

Johnson can next be seen in Netflix's action comedy sequel "Red Notice 2", and Amazon's action comedy "Red One" alongside Chris Evans.
