"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" landed in theaters this weekend and bombed pretty hard, falling well below the original film's debut. Still, this is old DCEU, not the new DCEU spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran, so this might be blowback from the fandom for the confusing state the DC cinematic universe is currently in.

The superhero sequel "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" opened in the top spot with $30.5 million from 4,071 theaters, a drop of 43% compared to the first film's debut in 2019 ($53.6 million). The film fell below initial projections that showed the film opening with around $35 million.
It was also projected to gross around $85 million worldwide, but with only $35 million raked in from overseas markets, the film's global tally now sits at $65.5 million, which is 58% below the original ($158.6 million), and a sign of trouble for the studio since the film cost $125 million to produce, which means it needs around $250 million or more to break even. China is the international market that malfunctioned the most, delivering a weak $4.4 million debut that sits 85% behind the first "Shazam!" ($30.9 million).
"Shazam! Fury of the Gods" received mixed reviews from critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes), and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B+" CinemaScore).
"Scream VI" dropped a steep 60.6% in its second weekend, and ended up finishing in second place with $17.5 million. It's not the sharpest decline in the franchise. That dubious honor belongs to "Scream 4", which dropped 62% in its sophomore frame. The film's domestic total has reached $76 million, while overseas it adds another $40 million for a worldwide total of $116 million.
"Creed III" finished its third weekend in third place with $15.3 million, dropping 44%. The film has now grossed a total of $127.6 million in North America and $96.6 million internationally, adding up to a total of $224.3 million worldwide.
Sony's sci-fi action thriller "65" raked in $5.8 million in its second weekend, a 53% decline from its debut weekend. The film's domestic cume is $22.4 million, while overseas it grossed $16.4 million. That's a global tally of $38.8 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Marvel's "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" with $4 million. The film dropped 43% from the previous week. The film has earned a total of $205.8 million in North America and $256.8 million internationally. All this adds up to $462.6 million worldwide.
