Amazon is hard at work on a TV series based on the popular video game franchise "Fallout", and in the first bit of casting news, "Justified" and "The Hateful Eight" star Walton Goggins has signed on for a lead role. The series, which has been in the works since 2020, hails from "Westworld" creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan. Nolan will also direct the first episode.
Like the games on which it's based, the show will be set in a world where the future envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s explodes upon itself through a nuclear war in 2077. While Goggins' role is being kept under wraps, sources say that he will play a character based on the ghouls from the games, humans who have been horribly disfigured due to exposure to radiation.
Geneva Robertson-Dworet ("Captain Marvel") and Graham Wagner ("Silicon Valley", "Portlandia") will serve as showrunners. Production is expected to begin later this year. Amazon Studios and Kilter Films are producing "Fallout" in association with Bethesda Game Studios and Bethesda Softworks. Bethesda's Todd Howard will serve as an executive producer on the series.
The first "Fallout" game was released in 1997, and the most recent installment in the franchise, "Fallout 76" was released in 2018.
