Steven Spielberg to Develop Film Based on Steve McQueen Character Frank Bullitt

Steven Spielberg is attached to direct and produce a new original story that centers on Frank Bullitt, the iconic character played by Steve McQueen in the 1968 thriller "Bullitt". The film, which is set up at Warner Bros, will be written by Josh Singer ("The Post", "Spotlight").

Acccording to sources close to the project, the film will not be a remake of the original, but a new idea centered on the character. The original film, which was based on the 1963 novel "Mute Witness", followed Frank Bullitt, a no-nonsense cop on the hunt for a mob kingpin that killed a witness, and it's best remembered for delivering one of the most famous car-chase scenes in cinema history, with McQueen famously doing all of his own driving in a modified Ford Mustang.

Steve McQueen's son Chad McQueen and granddaughter Molly McQueen are executive producing after a lengthy negotiation process with the McQueen estate to secure the rights to the character.

Since at this time there is no script and no deals have been set, this will not be the filmmaker's next movie. Spielberg recently wrapped filming on "Fablemans", which is loosely based on the director's childhood growing up in Arizona, and is set to premiere this Thanksgiving. His latest film, "West Side Story", is nominated for seven Oscar nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture.
