Sofia Vergara to Play Drug Queenpin Griselda Blanco in Netflix Limited Series

Sofía Vergara to Play Drug Queenpin Griselda Blanco in Netflix Limited Series
"Modern Family" star Sofia Vergara is set to star as notorious Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco aka Black Widow in an upcoming Netflix limited series. This is Vergara's first role since wrapping "Modern Family". She will also executive produce.

The six-episode miniseries hails from Eric Newman, who served as showrunner on five seasons of "Narcos" and "Narcos: Mexico", and it chronicles the real life of the savvy and ambitious Colombian business woman who created one of the most profitable drug cartels in history. A devoted mother, Blanco's lethal blend of charm and unsuspecting savagery helped her expertly navigate between family and business leading her to become widely known as the Black Widow and the Cocaine Godmother.

Several members of the "Narcos" creative team are working on the show. Doug Miro, Andres Baiz and Carlo Bernard are also on board as executive producer. Newman is currently under an overall deal at Netflix. Ingrid Escajeda serves as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner, with Escajeda co-writing the first episode with Miro. Baiz will direct all six episodes.

Griselda Blanco was portrayed by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the Lifetime biopic "Cocaine Godmother" in 2018. Jennifer Lopez announced she would portray Blanco in the film "The Godmother", a project she is rumored to also direct.

Vergara, who recently ended her run on the five-time Emmy Award-winning ABC comedy "Modern Family", also recently wrapped her second season as a judge on NBC's "America's Got Talent".
