Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon are set to star in the upcoming WWII epic "Oppenheimer" from director Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight", "Dunkirk", "Tenet"). Nolan will also adapt the screenplay from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin. Universal will distribute the film, which reportedly carries a $100 million production budget.
Nolan's new film is being described as an "epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it."
Oppenheimer, a physicist who was integral to the Manhattan Project, is known as the father of the atomic bomb, and the film will is expected to dramatize the creation of the nuclear weapon. The star-studded cast will feature Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine. It is unknown at this point who Downey Jr. and Damon will be playing as plot details are being kept under wraps.
Universal won the rights to the project in a heated bidding war against Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros. This will be the first time in 20 years that Nolan won't be working with Warner Bros.
"Oppenheimer" will open in theaters on July 21, 2023. Production will begin in early 2022.
