Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have signed on to star in Universal's feature adaptation of the Broadway musical hit "Wicked", which in turn was based on the novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire. The film will be directed by Jon M. Chu ("Crazy Rich Asians"). "Wicked" is still running on Broadway in its 18th year.
The story is a prequel to "Wizard of Oz", and it follows the friendship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch. Stephen Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics and Winnie Holzman wrote the book for the Broadway version. Erivo will play Elphaba while Grande will play Glinda.
Stephen Daldry was previously attached to direct, but had to depart last October due to scheduling conflicts, which delayed the production. Schwartz and Holzman also wrote the screenplay. Marc Platt, who produced the Broadway musical, is set to also produce the film.
Production is expected to begin in the summer in the U.K.
