After the success of Universal's "The Invisible Man" starring Elisabeth Moss, the studio's monster universe reboots will add Wolfman to the roster. The film is being developed as a starring vehicle for Ryan Gosling.
The screenplay for "Wolfman" is penned by "Orange Is the New Black" scribes Lauren Schuker Blum (wife of Blumhouse's Jason Blum) and Rebecca Angelo based on an original pitch by Gosling. The plot reportedly centers on an anchorman (Gosling) who gets infected, and has been described as having a vibe that evokes "Network" (1976) and "Nightcrawler" (2014).
Universal has been looking for a director over the past month and, according to sources, could be very close to making a decision soon. One of the directors who is said to be in the mix is Cory Finley (HBO's "Bad Education"). Gosling expressed interest to direct, but Universal decided against it.
The original character was played by Lon Chaney Jr. in the 1941 classic "The Wolf Man" and its various crossovers.
Universal originally had much bigger plans for its monster movies, envisioning an interconnected cinematic universe like Marvel's. However, after its first reboot, "The Mummy" starring Tom Cruise flopped, the studio decided to focus on smaller films which would allow filmmakers to develop unique stories. For example, "The Invisible Man" cost only 7 million to produce and grossed $122 million before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
Gosling is also attached to star in the astronaut thriller "Project Hail Mary" directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
