Two-time Academy Award nominee Ralph Fiennes is set to star in Netflix and Working Title's upcoming movie "Matilda". Based on Roald Dahl's classic children's novel of the same name, and the popular UK and Broadway musical stage play adaptation, the film will be released theatrically in the U.K. by Sony. The story was previously adapted into a 1996 film directed by Danny DeVito.
The book follows the adventures of a young bookworm prodigy who battles with her parents and Crunchem Hall Primary School's evil headmistress Miss Trunchbull. Fiennes will play Trunchbull, since the character was also played by a man in "Matilda The Musical". The show has been running in London since 2011 and had also had a successful Broadway run from 2013-2017.
The show's original director Matthew Warchus ("Pride") will helm the adaptation, and Dennis Kelly, who won a Tony for adapting the novel, is writing the screenplay. Also, Emmy winner Jodie Comer ("Killing Eve" is reportedly being considered for the the role of Miss Honey.
This is the first of a slate of Netflix projects based on Dahl's catalog of children's stories, which will be turned into premium animated event series and specials. The list of titles in the agreement between Netflix and the Roald Dahl Story Company includes "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The BFG", and "The Twits".
