The "Fast & Furious" spinoff "Hobbs & Shaw" performed according to expectations and delivered an impressive opening weekend, both domestically and overseas. The summer box-office is surging, also with the help of "The Lion King" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Hobbs & Shaw" confirms the continued box-office profitability of the "Fast & Furious" franchise. The spinoff delivered a strong $60.8 million debut from 4,253 theaters, which is the second widest release for this franchise, against an estimated budget of $200 million. It's not the best "Fast & Furious" opening, ranking sixth behind "Fast and Furious" ($70.9 million in 2009), "Fast Five" ($86.1 million in 2011), "Fast & Furious 6" ($97.3 million in 2013), "The Fate of the Furious" ($98.7 million in 2017) and, the absolute leader, "Furious 7" ($147.1 million in 2015).
Overseas, "Hobbs & Shaw" brought in $120 million from 63 countries, and Russia is leading the pack with $8.1 million. The film will open in China on August 23, which will probably provide a hefty boost to its international cume, as both "Furious 7" and "The Fate of the Furious" both raked in around $390 million from the country. With $180.8 million worldwide, this is Universal's fifth largest global opening ever.
The spinoff received a mixed reception from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes and 60 on Metacritic), but a warm welcome from audiences ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
In second place we find Disney's "live-action" remake "The Lion King" with $38.2 million. The film dropped 50% this weekend, which fits into the studio's expectations. The remake has grossed a total of $430.8 million domestically and added another $72 million overseas this weekend for an international total of $765 million. Its global total has now reached $1.195 billion.
Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" finished in third place with $20 million. The filmmaker's ninth film dropped 50% in its sophomore weekend, and its domestic tally has reached $78.8 million.
"Spider-Man: Far From Home" landed at #4 with $7.7 million for a domestic total of $360.3 million after 34 days in theaters. Overseas, the film added another $9.5 million, and its international cume has reached $715 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $1.08 billion.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Disney and Pixar's animated sequel "Toy Story 4" with $7.1 million, which brings its domestic total to $410 million, while overseas it added another $10.2 million for an international cume of $549.2 million.
It's worth mentioning that Danny Boyle's Beatles-inspired rom-com "Yesterday" is holding remarkably well. The film dropped just 20.8% this weekend, holding over in sixth place with $2.4 million. Its domestic total is now at $67.9 million, while internationally it grossed a total of $51 million after 38 days, against a budget estimated at $26 million.
In other news, the dramedy "The Farewell" starring Awkwafina continues to perform well as it expanded further this weekend and brought in $2.4 million from just 409 locations. The film has grossed a total of $6.8 million, so far, and will continue to expand throughout August and September, although a nationwide release has not been announced.
