The highly anticipated blockbuster sequel "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" managed to top the charts this weekend, but fell short of expectations. Still, it was enough to take down Disney's "Aladdin", which, by the way, is still doing just fine. Meanwhile, the Elton John biopic "Rocketman" and the Blumhouse horror flick "Ma" performed better than expected.
Warner Bros' "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" stomped the charts with a $49 million debut from 4,108 theaters, which is a good way to start a theatrical run, but not so good from a franchise perspective. The film fell well behind both the $93.2 million debut of its 2014 predecessor and the $61 million opening weekend of "Kong: Skull Island" in 2017. Hard to tell exactly what this means for the studio's MonsterVerse, the shared universe in which Godzilla and Kong are about to meet next year in the aptly titled "Godzilla vs. Kong".
Regardless, the film is still a big hit overseas, with a $130 million debut from 75 markets. Of course, China is at the top of the charts with $70 million. "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" received a generally mixed-to-negative reception from critics (39% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), while moviegoers' opinions were equally mixed ("B+" grade from CinemaScore's polls and 6.9 on IMDb).
In second place, Disney's "Aladdin" dropped 53.7% and finished the weekend with $42.3 million. The film's domestic total has reached $185 million after ten days in theaters. Internationally, it added another $78.3 million, for an overseas cume of $260.9 million.
At #3 we find one of the weekend's surprises, the Elton John biopic "Rocketman" which opened with $25 million from 3,610 theaters, a performance that is better than the studio's initial projections of an $18-20 million opening weekend. The film also brought in $19 million in its second weekend overseas, for an international total of $31.2 million. "Rocketman" was loved by both critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 71 on Metacritic) and audiences ("A-" grade from CinemaScore and 7.7 on IMDb).
The Blumhouse and Universal horror flick "Ma" opened in fourth place with $18.2 million from 2,808 theaters, which is slightly above studio expectations. The film also brought in $2.8 million overseas from 31 markets. "Ma" received a mixed reception from both critics (62% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("B-" from CinemaScore and 6.2 on IMDb).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the third installment in the "John Wick" franchise, which finished the weekend with $11.1 million, bringing its domestic cume to $125.7 million. Overseas the film brought in $12.7 million this weekend for an international tally of $95.9 million.
New Wide Releases: "Godzilla: King of the Monsters", "Ma", "Rocketman".
Biggest Drop : "A Dog's Journey" (-74.9%)
Smallest Drop : "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" (-50%)
