Weekend Box-Office: LION KING Roars to $185M Record-Breaking Debut

Tired of news about Disney dominating the box-office. That's too bad! Because the studio's most recent "live-action" remake of "The Lion King" scored a record-breaking debut over the weekend.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"The Lion King" topped the weekend charts with a massive $185 million debut from 4,756 theaters (a record number of locations), becoming the largest July opening weekend, a record previously held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" ($169.1 million). It's also the second largest opening of the year, behind "Avengers: Endgame" ($357 million), and the seventh largest of all time.

Internationally, "The Lion King" brought in $269 million over its second weekend for an international total of $346 million. China leads the pack with a total of $98 million. Overall, the remake now holds a tally of $531 million worldwide.

The computer animated film received a lukewarm reception from critics (55% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), but audiences generally liked it ("A" grade from CinemaScore's polls).

The Sony MCU movie "Spider-Man: Far From Home" finished in second place with $21 million, and its domestic total has reached $319.6 million after 20 days. Its overseas tally is now at $569.8 million.

In third place we find Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 4" with $14.6 million and a domestic cume of $375.5 million, while overseas it added another $25.8 million for a total of $483.9 million. The film has become Pixar's fifth largest worldwide release ($860 million), and the seventh to cross the $800 million mark.

The alligator thriller "Crawl" dropped 50% and finished its second weekend in fourth place with $6 million. The film has grossed $23.8 million domestically and another $9.9 million overseas, against a $13.5 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Universal's Beatles-inspired rom-com "Yesterday" with $5.1 million. The film dropped just 24% and its domestic total has reached $57.5 million. Overseas it raked in another $4.3 million for an international total of $40.6 million. For such a slow starter, the film managed to pick up traction, and globally it is closing in on the $100 million mark, which is not bad at all for the $26 million production.

In other news, "Avengers: Endgame" finally surpassed "Avatar" as the highest grossing worldwide release of all-time. Disney and Marvel's blockbuster brought in a total of $2.79 million, while James Cameron's 2009 sci-fi epic grossed 2.78 million. However, inflation adjustements contribute towards a wider gap between the two films, and ticket prices are definitely not the same as they were ten years ago. But you won't hear anything about that from Disney.
