The weekend's biggest new arrivals, the animated sequel "The Secret Life of Pets 2" and the new installment in the X-Men saga "Dark Phoenix", managed to beat out the competition and top the charts, but came up short of initial projections.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
It's not all doom and gloom, as the box-office this weekend has reportedly outperformed the same weekend last year by more than 43%. But a closer look at the Top 10 reveals some troubling facts about both newcomers and older releases.
The big winner is Illlumination's animated film "The Secret Life of Pets 2" with $47.1 million from 4,561 theaters, although the film was expected to finish with $50+ million. It's also a massive step down from the original film's $104.3 million opening weekend in 2016.
Overseas, the film has managed to bring in $16 million this weekend from 30 markets for an overseas total of $49 million aftter 10 days in theaters. The original film was a surprise hit, earning $875 million worldwide in its entire theatrical run.
"The Secret Life of Pets 2" received a mixed reception from critics (54 on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), while moviegoers generally enjoyed it ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's audience polls).
Disney's release of 20th Century Fox's X-Men movie "Dark Phoenix" suffered the most as it opened with $33 million from 3,721 theaters for a second-place finish. Pundits predicted that the film would open somewhere between $40 million and $50 million. This is the worst opening weekend ever for an X-Men movie at the domestic box-office. Its immediate predecessor, "X-Men: Apocalypse", opened with $65.7 million in 2016.
Overseas is where the studio hopes to recoup its $200 million investment, and "Dark Phoenix" is indeed off to a decent start. The film earned $107 million from 53 markets, with China bringing in $45.6 million.
The superhero film was panned by the critics (22% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic), and moviegoers seem to agree with the negative critical reception ("B-" grade from CinemaScore).
In third place we find another Disney release, the live-action "Aladdin" remake, with $24.5 million after a 42.8% drop. The film's domestic tally has reached an impressive $232.3 million domestically after 17 days in theaters. Overseas it brought in another $67.6 million this weekend from 55 markets and its international total has reached $372.5 million. Its worldwide cume now stands at $604 million.
Last week's #1 movie, Warner Bros and Legendary's "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" finished in fourth place with $15.5 million after a catastrophic 67.5% drop. Although scary, the drop actually matches the original film's second weekend drop, with the only difference that the 2014 film had a much higher opening weekend. The domestic total of "King of the Monsters" has reached $78.6 million after 10 days.
Overseas, the "Godzilla" sequel added another $47 million from 78 markets, for an international total of $213.7 million. The film's worldwide total is very close to topping $300 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Elton John biopic "Rocketman" with $14 million after dropping 45.6% in its second weekend. Its domestic total is now at $50.4 million. Overseas, the biopic added another 13 million from 50 markets, and its international tally has reached $51.3 million.
In other news, Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame" is winding down with a total of $8.6 million collected globally this weekend. As the film's worldwide cume is currently at $2.73 billion, it might not be able to take down "Avatar"'s $2.78 billion record after all.
