Weekend Box-Office: ANNABELLE Scared Off by TOY STORY 4

The summer slump at the box-office is still here, but at least the new releases this weekend performed as expected, if not particularly stellar. "Toy Story 4" is still well ahead of the pack, while "Annabelle Comes Home" had to settle for a second-place finish. Meanwhile, Danny Boyle's Beatles-inspired rom-com "Yesterday" delivered the director's biggest opening ever.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

Disney and Pixar's animated sequel "Toy Story 4" brought in another $57.9 million for a domestic total of $236.9 million. The film dropped 52% in its second weekend, which is pretty steep. Overseas it raked in a total of $259.6 million, so far, which brings its worldwide total to $496.5 million.

In second place we find the newly-released horror film "Annabelle Comes Home", the latest Conjurverse installment, and the third film in the "Annabelle" spinoff series. The sequel opened on Wednesday and scored $20.3 million from 3,613 theaters over the weekend for a total of $31.2 million in five days. While the film did not underperform, it's the lowest debut in "The Conjuring" franchise, and a clear sign that Warner Bros is perhaps overstretching this particular film series.

"Annabelle Comes Home" opened overseas with $45 million from 63 countries for a worldwide total of $76.2 million. Regardless of its relatively slow debut, the film only cost around $30 million to produce, so it's still going to turn a handsome profit. The film received mixed reviews from critics (70% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic) and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B-" from CinemaScore's polls).

The musical romantic comedy "Yesterday" opened in third place with $17 million from 2,603 theaters, which is director Danny Boyle's best opening weekend, ahead of the 2000 film "The Beach" ($15.2 million) and "28 Days Later" ($10 million). It's not a stellar performance, but given how hard it is for original counter-programming films to take off, it's a decent start for the $30-million production.

"Yesterday" also brought in $7.7 million from 30 overseas markets. The film received a mixed reception from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), while moviegoers generally liked it ("A-" from CinemaScore).

Disney's "Aladdin" finished the weekend in fourth place with 9.3 million after dropping just 29%. The live-action remake has topped $300 million domestically and with $568.3 grossed from overseas markets, so far, its worldwide total has reached $874.2 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Universal and Illumination's animated sequel "The Secret Life of Pets 2" with $7 million. The film has grossed $131.2 million domestically after 24 days in theaters, and another $91.8 million internationally.

In other news, "Avengers: Endgame" is trying hard to beat "Avatar"'s worldwide record. The film was re-released in 1,040 theaters with new footage and delivered $5.5 million domestically and another 2.3 million overseas. Unfortunately, it still wasn't enought, leaving the Marvel flick $30 million behind the $2.79 billion (not adjusted for inflation) that James Cameron's epic currently holds. The box-office war could continue with Cameron re-releasing his film in theaters, thus widening the margin between the two films. All jokes aside, that could actually happen when the first "Avatar" sequel hits theaters in 2021.

Marvel is currently enjoying more success overseas with the release of "Spider-Man: Far From Home" which delivered a total of  $111 million from China ($98 million), Japan and Hong Kong. The MCU sequel will be released domestically on Tuesday.

Also, "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" crossed the $300 million mark worldwide. It's a huge success for the franchise, as previous films finished their theatrical runs with $88 million and $171 million worldwide, respectively.
