After the "Dark Phoenix" debacle, we have more bad news at the summer box-office this weekend as new releases "Men in Black: International" and "Shaft" underperformed. This, along with poor performances from other blockbusters in the Top 10, contributed to a weekend box-office that has declined significantly compared to last year.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Men in Black: International" managed to top the charts with $28.5 million from 4,200 theaters, against a $110 million budget, which is the worst debut in the franchise's history. The first film opened with $51 million in 1997, the second with $52.1 million in 2002, and finally, the third with $54.5 million in 2012.
Internationally, "International" isn't doing very well, either, grossing $73.7 million from 36 countries. China led the markets with $26.3 million.
The sci-fi sequel, which is actually a spinoff of the trilogy that starred Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, received mostly negative reviews from critics (24% on Rotten Tomatoes and 38 on Metacritic), and a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls).
In second place, we find Universal and Illumination's animated sequel "The Secret Life of Pets 2" with 23.8 million, a 49% drop from its opening weekend, which brings its domestic tally to $92 million after 14 days in theaters. Overseas the film has raked in another $47.5 million this weekend for an overseas total of $461 million.
Disney's "Aladdin" is one of the few big budget films in the Top 10 that is (still) doing well. The live-action remake added another $16.7 million domestically and $47.5 million overseas. Its domestic total has reached $263.4 million, while its international tally is closing in on the $500 million mark.
Last week's box-office flop, the X-Men flick "Dark Phoenix" dropped a massive 72.6% this weekend and grossed only $9 million. It's the second largest second weekend drop for a film playing in over 3,500 theaters, behind "Fifty Shades of Grey", which managed a 73.9% drop in its second weekend. "Dark Phoenix" has now reached a domestic total of $51.7 million, while its overseas cume is now at $152.5 million after raking in another $24.2 million this weekend. With a global tally of $204 million, the film has now recouped its production costs ($200 million).
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Elton John biopic '"Rocketman", which is holding at #5 with $8.8 million. The film has so far grossed a total of $66.1 million domestically after three weeks in theaters, and $67 million internationally.
The other new wide release, Warner Bros' sequel "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson, opened in sixth place with a weak $8.3 million from 2,952 theaters. Since the studio projected a $15 million debut, this is a pretty serious disappointment. Its predecessor, the 2000 reboot of the iconic franchise, also titled "Shaft", brought in $21.7 million in its opening weekend. The 2019 film's saving grace could be that it only cost $30-35 million to produce, but even so it's a longshot at best.
"Shaft" received a mixed-to-negative reception from critics (35% on Rotten Tomatoes and 41 on Metacritic), but moviegoers generally liked it ("A" grade from CinemaScore's audience polls).
The R-rated comedy "Late Night" starring Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling expanded nationwide this weekend and finished in ninth place with $5.1 million from 2,220 locations, which is a decent, but unspectacular result.
Also, it looks like Blumhouse has another hit on their hands as their latest horror film "Ma" starring Octavia Spencer is getting ready to exit the Top 10 with a domestic total of $40 million against a $5 million budget.
New Wide Releases: "Men In Black: International", "Shaft".
Biggest Drop : "Dark Phoenix" (-72.6%)
Smallest Drop : "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" (-17.8%)
