The summer box-office curse continues and this week it hit Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 4", which severely underperformed, despite topping the weekend charts and outperforming its predecessors. That's crazy, I know ! The "Child's Play" remake fell slightly below predictions, but scored a decent deubt, nonteheless, while Luc Besson's "Anna" tanked and failed to make the Top 10.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
The animated sequel "Toy Story 4" opened with $118 million from 4,575 theaters, which is the franchise's highest debut, besting "Toy Story 3"s $110.3 million opening weekend. It's also the fourth largest animated opening ever. The only trouble with this debut is that it's well below the $140-165 million that Disney was expecting. Overseas, the film brought in $120 million from 37 countries for a worldwide total of $238 million.
"Toy Story 4" opened to near-universal praise from critics (98% on Rotten Tomatoes and 84 on Metacritic) and audiences ("A" grade from CinemaScore). Strong word-of-mouth will definitely help the film defend its position in the coming weeks.
The R-rated horror film "Child's Play", a remake of the 1988 cult classic about an evil killer doll, opened in second place with $14 million from 3,007 theaters. It fell short of expectations as pundits predicted a $15-17 million debut. Still, it's a strong debut since the film only cost $10 million to produce.
The remake received mixed reviews from critics (60% on Rotten Tomatoes and 47 on Metacritic) and a not-so-good reception from moviegoers ("C+" from CinemaScore).
Disney's "Aladdin" is still going strong at #3 with $12.2 million after dropping just 29.5% in its fifth weekend in theaters. The film's domestic total has reached $288 million, while overseas it grossed another $33 million this weekend for an international tally of $522.6 million. Its worldwide cume has topped $800 million.
In fourth place, "Men in Black: International" continues to crash after last week's disappointing debut. The film only brought in $10.7 million this weekend after dropping 64%. The film has grossed a total of $52.6 million domestically after ten days in release. Overseas it brought in $30 million, raising its international cume to $129 million.
Rounding out the Top 5 is Universal and Illumination's sequel "The Secret Life of Pets 2" with $10.3 million after a 58% drop. The U.S. tally is currently at $117.5 million after 17 days, while overseas it brought in a total of 77.1 million.
Luc Besson's action thriller "Anna" is the week's biggest disaster, opening with $3.5 million from 2.114 theaters against a $30 million budget. The film received a negative reception from critics (25% from Rotten Tomatoes and 41 on Metacritic), and a lukewarm response from moviegoers ("B+" from CinemaScore).
