The third installment in the "John Wick" action saga opened with $57 million from 3,850 theaters, a record for this franchise after the first film grossed $14.4 million when it opened in 2014, and its first sequel scored a $30.4 million debut in 2017. It's also the first in the series to debut at No. 1. Overseas the film brought in $35 million from 66 markets. The threequel has received a very warm welcome from both critics (88% on Rotten Tomatoes and 74 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A-" from CinemScore's opening night polls).
"Avengers: Endgame" finished in second place with $29.4 million over the weekend. With a domestic total of $770.8 million, the film has now surpassed "Avatar" ($761 million) to become the second highest grossing domestic release ever, behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" with $937 million. Overseas it has reached a total of $1.84 billion. As its worldwide total has topped $2.6 billion, the Marvel flick is now very close to also beating "Avatar" internationally ($2.78 billion).
