The new Conjurverse installment "The Curse of La Llorona" secured the top spot at the box-office with ease. Meanwhile, the other Easter weekend newcomers fell short of expectations, while old releases enjoyed a small holiday boost.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"The Curse of La Llorona" is the sixth installment in "The Conjuring" franchise, although the marketing campaign simply labeled it as "from the producers of "The Conjuring", and it looks like that connection really helped push the film forward. The horror flick opened with $26.5 million from 3,372 theaters, an incredible overperformance, as pundits expected it to debut with around $17 million. What is even more interesting is that an R-rated horror film beat out a PG-rated faith based drama ("Breakthrough") over Easter weekend. The latter opened a bit lower than expected, but more about that later.
"La Llorona" also opened in 71 international markets and brought in $30 million. The critics weren't big fans of this movie (32% on Rotten Tomatoes and 41 on Metacritic), while audiences had mixed feelings ("B-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
In second place we find "Shazam!", which managed to drop just 29%, grossing $17.3 million over the weekend, which brings its domestic tally to $121.3 million after 17 days in theaters. Overseas the film has grossed a total of 201.5 million after adding another $22 million this weekend.
The true story faith-based drama "Breakthrough", the first Disney release of a Fox film, opened slightly below predictions in third place with $11.1 million from 2,824 theaters. Still, it's a decent result for the $14 million production. "Breakthrough" opened on Wednesday, and brought in a total of $14.6 million in five days. Internationally the film has grossed a total of $5.9 million in 14 days. The critical reception was generally mixed (64% from Rotten Tomatoes and 48 from Metacritic), but, as is generally the case with Christian films, it received an "A" grade from CinemaScore's audience polls.
Marvel's "Captain Marvel" received a holiday boost, up almost 6% from last week. The film climbed from #6 to #4 this weekend with $9.1 million. The film has now topped $400 million domestically, while overseas it has grossed a total of $689.5 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the fantasy comedy "Little" with $8.4 million, down 45.1% from last week's debut. The film has grossed $29.3 million domestically after 10 days against a $20 million budget.
Surprisingly, Disneynature's new doc "Penguins" opened outside the Top 10 with only $2.3 million for the weekend. The film grossed a total of $3.3 million after opening on Wednesday. Expectations were already low, but it somehow managed to perform even worse. This is officially Disneynature's worst opening ever. Reviews for the film were mostly positive (90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 69 on Metacritic), and audiences enjoyed what they saw ("A" from CinemaScore).
