Weekend Box-Office: DETECTIVE PIKACHU Scores Record-Breaking Video Game Adaptation Debut

While not strong enough to overtake "Avengers: Endgame", which continues to dominate the box-office, new arrival "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" scored a very strong, record-breaking debut. Meanwhile, the comedy "The Hustle" opened as expected, but "Poms" and "Tolkien" both struggled.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

Disney's "Avengers: Endgame" finished the Mother's Day weekend with $63 million after dropping 57%. The film has topped $700 million domestically and now stands as the third highest grossing domestic release of all-time, after surpassing "Black Panther" ($700 million). The Marvel blockbuster also brought in $102.3 million from overseas markets this weekend, bringing its international tally to $1.7 billion. With a worldwide total off 2.48 billion, the film is closing in on "Avatar", the all-time champ, which has grossed $2.7 billion in 2009-2010.

Warner Bros' live-action animated hybrid flick "Pokemon Detective Pikachu" opened in second place with $58 million from 4,202 theaters, which is officially the largest opening weekend for a video game adaptation ever since "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" opened with $47.7 million in 2001. Of course, that's not true if you adjust for inflation, as $47.7 million in 2001 becomes $75.9 million in 2019, but it does make for a much better news title, doesn't it ?

Regardless, the film did manage a very strong debut, and with a positive response from moviegoers ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls), it has a very bright future ahead of it. The film's critical reception was mostly mixed (63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 52 on Metacritic).

Internationally, "Detective Pikachu" scored $103 million this weekend and a total of $112.4 million in 10 days (it opened in Japan last weekend). As usual, China leads the way with $41 million.

In third place we find another new release, the comedy "The Hustle". The remake scored a $13.5 million debut from 3,007 theaters, which is slightly better than expected. Overseas it brought in $13.7 million from 36 countries. The film was universally panned by critics (16% on Rotten Tomatoes and 36 on Metacritic), and received a lukewarm reception from moviegoers ("B-" grade from CinemaScore).

The thriller "The Intruder" finished the weekend in fourth place with $6.6 million after a soft 39% drop. The film has grossed a total of $20.7 million domestically against an $8 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the romantic comedy "Long Shot" with $6.1 million. The film also held better than expected, dropping just 37% in its second weekend. The film's domestic tally has reached $19.7 million after 10 days.

Another new release, the comedy "Poms" opened in sixth place with $5.1 million from 2,750 theaters. This is STX Entertainment's second misfire this month after the disappointing debut of their first animated film "UglyDolls" last week. The film received mostly negative reviews from critics (29% on Rotten Tomatoes and 37 on Metacritic), but a slightly better response from moviegoers ("B+" grade from CinemaScore).

The last of the new wide releases, and quite a disappointment, is the biopic "Tolkien", which barely made it into the Top 10 in last place with $2.1 million from 1,495 theaters. The film was initially set for a limited release, before being upgraded to a semi-wide release, which, as it seems, didn't quite pan out. Reviews for the film were mostly mixed (49% on Rotten Tomatoes and 48 on Metacritic).

New Wide Releases: "Pokemon Detective Pikachu", "The Hustle", "Poms", "Tolkien".

Biggest Drop : "Dumbo" (-62%)
