As expected, Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame" dominated the weekend box-office and was very close to breaking another major record. Close, but no cigar. Meanwhile, a fresh wave of new releases, "Long Shot", "The Intruder", and "UglyDolls", struggled to find their audiences.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Avengers: Endgame" topped its second weekend at the box-office with $145.8 million after dropping almost 60%. While that drop might seem pretty steep, it kind of is, but considering how massive its opening weekend was, its second weekend still ranks as the second best ever, behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149.2 million). "Avengers: Infinity War" only brought in $114.7 million in its second weekend.
While it couldn't overtake "The Force Awakens" for this particular record, it still raked in an incredible $619.6 million domestically in just 10 days. Also, the film grossed another $282 million overseas, for an international total of $1.5 billion, which brings its worldwide cume to $2.188 billion. China leads all international markets with a total of $575 million. It currently ranks as the second biggest global release of all-time, behind "Avatar" ($2.787 billion). At this rate, the Marvel/Disney blockbuster might be the first film to finally take down James Cameron's 2009 behemoth.
The first of the new wide releases, the thriller "The Intruder" finished in second place with an $11 million debut from 2,222 theaters. The film overperformed, as the studio expected it to bring in around $9 million, and it has already recouped its $8 million production budget. "The Intruder" received mostly negative reviews from critics (27% on Rotten Tomatoes and 38 on Metacritic), and a mixed reception from moviegoers ("B-" from CinemaScore's opening night polls).
Close behind in third place, we find the R-rated romantic comedy "Long Shot", which fell a bit short of expectations with a $10 million debut from 3,230 theaters. Overseas, the film opened with $3.3 million from 22 markets. The critical reception for the film was warm enough (83% on Rotten Tomatoes and 67 on Metacritic), and moviegoers were just okay with it ("B" grade from CinemaScore).
The last of the new wide releases, STX's first ever computer animated film, "UglyDolls", finished in fourth place. This one fell well below expectations with an $8.5 million debut, especially since the studio was hoping for a hit as they currently have a deal with Hulu for a 26-episode series based on the film to be released next year. Its only saving grace is that it cost a modest $45 million to produce. The film was widely panned by critics (33% on Rotten Tomatoes and 39 on Metacritic), but it received a decent response from audiences ("B+" from CinemaScore).
The Top 5 is rounded out by Marvel's "Captain Marvel" with $4.2 million. The film's domestic total has reached $420 million, and its overseas cume is close to topping $700 million.
