Weekend Box-Office: AVENGERS ENDGAME Shatters Records With $1.2 Billion Global Debut

The latest Marvel installment, "Avengers: Endgame" cleaned up at the box-office this weekend, breaking records and causing major drops for most films in the Top 10.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

As "Avengers: Endgame" is a bookend to a superhero saga that began 11 years ago and a story arc that's spanned 22 films, it was reasonable to expect that a record or two would be destroyed. The film dominated the global box-office and exceeded expectations with a record-breaking $1.2 billion grossed worldwide in just 5 days (fastest ever). It took "Infinity War" eleven days to reach $1 billion.

The 22nd installment in the MCU opened with a massive $350 million in the U.S., almost $93 million more than the debut of "Infinity War" last year, and that film went on to finish its domestic run with a total gross of $680 million. "Endgame" now holds the absolute opening weekend record, beating out not only its MCU predecessor, but also "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($248 million), "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" ($220 million) and "Jurassic World" ($208 million).

And there are a ton of records broken by the film, including Fastest to $350 million, Largest Friday, Opening Day and Single Day ($156.7 million), Largest Saturday and Sunday ($109 million and $84.3 million), Largest Thursday Previews ($60 million),  and Largest April Debut. It also had the widest opening ever, with 4,662 theaters, and delivered 90% of the overall weekend market share, which is another broken record.

The new "Avengers" flick might end up topping $1 billion domestically. All signs point to it. The critical reception has been very warm (96% on Rotten Tomatoes and 77 on Metacritic), and audiences have responded overwhelmingly positive toward it ("A+" from CinemaScore).

Overseas, the Marvel blockbuster was just as devastating at the box-office, destroying a few more records in the process. It opened with $859 million, the largest international debut ever, beating the previous record of $443.1 million set by "The Fate of the Furious" in 2017. Even "Infinity War" only managed a $382 million opening overseas. As usual, the leading market was China with $330.5 million (largest five-day debut ever), followed by the U.K. with $53.8 million and Korea with $47.4 million. Overall, the film managed to break opening weekend records in 44 countries. Russia is the only country where the film hasn't been released, and that day will come on April 29.

But enough about Marvel ... oh wait! In second place we find another MCU movie. "Captain Marvel" received a solid boost from the studio's "Endgame", and ascended from #4 to #2 with $8 million.  The film's domestic total has reached $413 million, and it has now become the ninth largest superhero release of all-time domestically, after topping "Wonder Woman". Overseas it has grossed a total of $696.6 million, and its worldwide tally has increased to reach $1.1 billion after 52 days in theaters.

Last week's #1 movie, the horror film "The Curse of La Llorona" was just one of the films that suffered heavy losses due to Marvel's behemoth. The Conjurverse flick dropped a steep 71% this weekend, grossing $7.5 million. However, the film doesn't have many reasons to complain as its domestic total has reached $41.2 million against a $9 million budget. It also grossed another $8 million overseas for an international cume of $45.7 million.

The Disney-Fox faith-based true story drama "Breakthrough" dropped a softer 44.1% and finished the weekend in fourth place with $6.3 million. The film has grossed a total of $26.1 million domestically, and another $7.6 million overseas.

The Top 5 is rounded out by the DC Comics movie "Shazam!" with $5.5 million after a rough drop of 66%. The film has reached a domestic tally of $131 million, while overseas it added another $5.4 million for a total of $215 million.
