The summer box-office season does not look very impressive, so far. After "Dark Phoenix" nearly tanked last weekend, two new wide releases are headed towards disaster this week.
The first is "Men in Black: International" starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson, a sequel/spinoff/reboot that has been savagely ripped to pieces by the critics. While the audience reception isn't quite as negative, it is pretty lackluster, as confirmed by the "B" grade from CinemaScore's opening night polls. The film managed to rake in $3.1 million from Thursday night previews and pundits expect it to finish the weekend with a $30 million total from 4,224 theaters. However, things can turn out much worse when such an unenthusiastic reception is involved.
The other new major release is the sequel/reboot "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson. The critical reception for the film is mostly negative, but moviegoers have responded more positively. CinemaScore reports an "A" grade from their audience polls. However, the film isn't pegged as a big winner at the box-office, with a projected opening weekend of $15 million from 2,952 theaters.
In limited release it might be worth checking out Jim Jarmusch's star-studded zombie comedy "The Dead Don't Die", and the romantic dramedy "Hampstead" starring Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleeson.

He is a gruff Irish loner who lives off the land in a makeshift cabin and wants nothing more than to be left in peace. When his home is threatened by greedy real estate developers, Emily believes she has found her new cause--but gets more than she bargained for when unexpected romance blossoms.
