Weekend Box-Office: MADEA Fails to Defeat HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 3

Although it made a decent amount of money in its opening weekend and even outperformed expectations, the ninth and thankfully last installment in Tyler Perry's Madea franchise failed to secure the top position at the box-office as DreamWorks Animation's threequel "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" managed to maintain its dominance. Meanwhile, the new release "Greta" was a bit of a disaster.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World" topped the box-office charts in its second weekend with $30 million after a 45% drop. The film has grossed $97.6 million after ten days in theaters and is, so far, outpacing the previous films in the series. Overseas it has brought in $52 million this weekend, including a $33.4 million debut in China, which brings its international total to $277.7 million.

Tyler Perry's "A Madea Family Funeral" opened in second place with $27 million from 2,442 theaters, which is somewhat of a surprise as the previous installment in this franchise, "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" opened with $21.2 million in 2017. The current performance is the fourth best debut in the series, and also the widest release. The film, like all previous installments, received a negative reception from critics (41 on Metacritic and 24% on Rotten Tomatoes), but a more positive response from moviegoers ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).

The sci-fi epic "Alita: Battle Angel" finished in third place with $7 million, which brings its domestic total to $72.2 million after 18 days in theaters. Internationally the film grossed another $40.4 million from 81 countries, bringing its overseas tally to $278.2 million.

"The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part" got pushed to #4 with $6.6 million, and looks to be performing a bit better these days, with only a 31% drop this weekend. The film has grossed a total of 91.6 million domestically and $61.1 million overseas.

The Top 5 is rounded out by this year's Oscar's Best Picture winner "Green Book" which was released in 1,388 more theaters and registered a solid 121% increase, grossing $4.7 million over the weekend and bringing its domestic total to $75.9 million. Internationally the film has grossed $112.1 million, all against a $23 million budget.

All of this year's Oscar's Best Picture nominees saw increases throughout the box-office charts, all of them outside the Top 10, but apart from "Green Book", the most exceptional upticks belong to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" with a 137% jump after adding another 1,661 theaters, and "A Star is Born" with a sensational 209% jump after adding just 490 theaters. The former grossed $2.1 million and has a domestic total of $187.3 million, while the latter grossed $1.8 million and its domestic tally has reached $212.9 million.

The other new wide release, the psychological thriller "Greta" opened in a disappointing eighth place with $4.5 million from 2,441 theaters. The film received mixed reviews from critics (58% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic) and a poor reception from audiences ("C-" grade from CinemaScore).
