Weekend Box-Office: AQUAMAN Still King for a Second Consecutive Weekend

/weekend-box-office-aquaman-tops-charts-second-weekend

Not surprisingly, "Aquaman" is still the top movie at the box-office in the last weekend of 2018, while "Mary Poppins" and "Bumblebee" continue to perform well. New releases "Vice" and "Holmes and Watson" failed to make much of an impact against such tough competition.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

"Aquaman" rules supreme for a second consecutive weekend with $51.5 million after a very soft 23.5% drop, the smallest second weekend drop in the DC Extended Universe. The film has grossed $188.7 million domestically, making it the eleventh largest DC Comics release in the U.S., while its international $560 million tally ranks it as the second largest international release, behind "The Dark Knight Rises". So far, the film ranks third worldwide among DCEU releases, topping "Suicide Squad".

Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" grossed $28 million in its second weekend, which is a 19% increase from last weekend, and its post-Christmas performance has been strong enough to bring its domestic total to $98.9 million after 12 days. The overseas performance isn't all that impressive, however, with the film grossing 28.9 million this weekend from 37 markets, which brings its international cume to $74.4 million.

The "Transformers" prequel/spinoff "Bumblebee" finished in third place with $20.5 million after dropping 5%. The film isn't performing as well as expected, but the $135 million blockbuster has brought in $66.7 million domestically and a total of $90 million from 55 overseas markets.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" held over in fourth place and brought in $18.3 million this weekend, an 11.2% increase, bringing the domestic tally to $103.6 million. Overseas the film has grossed 109.6 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Clint Eastwood's drama "The Mule" with $11.7 million. The film registered one of the weekend's highest increases, up 24% from last weekend, and its domestic total has reached $60.7 million.

The first of the Christmas Day releases, the Dick Cheney satirical biopic "Vice" grossed $7.7 million from 2,442 theaters over the weekend, and a total of $17.6 million domestically after six days against a  $60 million budget. This already makes it Annapurna's highest grossing domestic release of all-time. The film received mixed reviews from critics (64% on Rotten Tomatoes and 61 on Metacritic) and a worse reception from moviegoers ("C+" on CinemaScore).

As for the other new release, the comedy "Holmes & Watson" grossed $7.3 million from 2,776 theaters this weekend, which brings its six-day total to $19.7 million against a $42 million budget. It also brought in $4 million from its first international weekend release in eight countries. The film was destroyed by both critics (9% on Rotten Tomatoes and 24 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("D+" from CinemaScore), so this one will fade away quickly.
