"Aquaman" is no longer the #1 film at the box-office, and its place at the top has been taken by the long-delayed dramedy "The Upside". "A Dog's Way Home" opened according to expectations, which isn't so bad, but the Keanu Reeves sci-fi thriller "Replicas" failed to make it into the Top 10.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"The Upside" opened with a strong $19.5 million from 3,080 theaters against a $37.5 million budget, defying expectations and giving STX Entertainment its first #1 debut ever. The film is a remake of the 2011 French film "The Intouchables", and was supposed to be released in 2017, but was shelved when The Weinstein Co. went bankrupt following the Harvey Weinstein scandal. The film received mixed reviews from critics (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 44 on Metacritic), but audiences responded more positively ("A" grade from CinemaScore polls).
"Aquaman" dropped to #2 with $17.2 million in its fourth week in theaters, but Warner Bros has every reason to celebrate as the film has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, and it is currently the first film in the DC Extended Universe to achieve this goal. Among DC Comics adaptations, it ranks second behind "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.08 billion).
Another new wide release, the family adventure film "A Dog's Way Home", an adaptation of the W. Bruce Cameron novel, opened in third place with $11.3 million from 3,090 theaters against an $18 million budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics (59% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 on Metacritic), but audiences seem to like it ("A-" from CinemaScore).
In fourth place we find Sony Animation's "Spider-Man: Into the the Spider-Verse" with $9 million after a 31% drop in its fifth week. The film has grossed $147.7 million domestically, and another $154.6 million overseas.
The Top 5 is rounded out by last week's #2 film, the thriller "Escape Room" with $8.9 million after a 51% drop. The film has brought in $32.4 million after 10 days in theaters, and it only cost $9 million to produce.
The biopic "On the Basis of Sex" expanded nationwide this weekend and finished in eighth place with $6.2 million from 1,923 theaters. The film has grossed a total of $10.5 million domestically.
The sci-fi thriller "Replicas" starring Keanu Reeves tanked with an estimated $2.5 million from 2,329 theaters, which ranks as one of the worst openings ever for a film released in over 2,000 locations. The film was universally panned by critics (11% on Rotten Tomatoes and 17 on Metacritic), and moviegoers are in agreement ("C" from CinemaScore).
New Wide Releases: "The Upside", "A Dog's Way Home", "Replicas".
Biggest Drop : "Mary Poppins Returns" (-54.5%)
Smallest Drop : "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" (-31.4%)
