Weekend Box-Office: AQUAMAN Sinks MARY POPPINS With $67M Debut

The start of the five-day Christmas weekend brought Warner Bros a ton of money as their latest DC Comics flick "Aquaman" crushed the competition and secured the top spot at the weekend box-office. "Mary Poppins Returns" and "Bumblebee" performed as expected, which is pretty unremarkable, so far. The romantic comedy "Second Act" found its way into the latter half of the Top 10, while the debut of Robert Zemeckis' new film "Welcome to Marwen" was a total disaster.

Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.

The DCEU movie "Aquaman" topped the charts with $67 million over the weekend and the film's domestic total now stands at $72.1 million after adding the $4.7 million from Amazon Prime showings. This debut is among the Top Ten December openings of all-time, and the sixth within the DC Extended Universe. The five-day total is expected to cross the $100 million mark. The film's production budget is a reported $200 million. Overseas, the film has grossed $91 million this weekend from 70 countries, and the international total has reached $410.7 million, of which $232.8 million come from China. "Aquaman" received generally mixed reviews from critics (63% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), but the audiences' response was pretty enthusiastic ("A-" from CinemaScore).

In second place we find Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" which opened with $22.2 million over the weekend, and a total of $31 million since its debut on December 19. While not particularly impressive, pundits expect this one to grow between Christmas and New Year, although expecting it to perform similarly to last year's "The Greatest Showman" would be too much. Internationally the film grossed $20.3 million from 17 markets. "Mary Poppins Returns" received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (77 on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 on Metacritic) and a solid "A-" from CinemaScore's audience polls.

The "Transformers" spinoff prequel "Bumblebee" opened in third place with $21 million, which also played out according to expectations, even though it might not seem like much of a feat. This one is also expected to perform well throughout Christmas and New Year. Overseas, the film has brought in $31.1 million from 38 markets, with the big China release scheduled for January 4th. "Bumlebee" is the first "Transformers" movie in quite some time to receive a positive reception from both critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes and 66 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A-" from CinemaScore).

Last week's No.1 movie, Sony's "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" dropped to #4 with $16.7 million after a steeper-than-expected 53% drop, and its domestic total has reached $64.8 million. The film opened in China this weekend with $26.1 million, which brings its international tally to $64.8 million.

The Top 5 is rounded out by Clint Eastwood's "The Mule" which added $9.9 million this weekend and its domestic total is now at $35.6 million.

At #6, Illumination's "The Grinch" is riding the Christmas wave. The film has dropped just 30.4% in its sixth weekend, grossing $8.1 million. Its domestic total has reached $253.2 million.

Another new release, the romantic comedy "Second Act" starring Jennifer Lopez opened in seventh place with $6.5 million, which is pretty good considering the film only cost $16 million to produce. The film received mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (41% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), but moviegoers weren't as harsh ("B+" from CinemaScore).

The last of the new wide releases, Robert Zemeckis' ambitious biopic "Welcome to Marwen" was a complete disaster. The film opened with $2.3 million from 1,911 theaters against a $39 million budget, and was ravaged by critics (25% on Rotten Tomatoes and 40 on Metacritic). While it's obvious audiences were not impressed by it, CinemaScore's "B-" grade is actually better than expected, however, at this point it probably won't do it any good.

A surprise in the Top 10 is the ascension of the historical drama "Mary Queen of Scots" starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. The film finished in tenth place with $2.2 million after expanding into 729 additional theaters.

New Wide Releases: "Aquaman", "Bumblebee", "Mary Poppins Returns", "Welcome to Marwen", "Second Act".

Biggest Drop : "Mortal Engines" (-77%)

Smallest Drop : "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch" (-30.4%)
