The holiday weekend at the box-office has been slow. In fact, it has been the worst since 2004. The leader of the pack was Fox's "Alita: Battle Angel", and the satirical romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic" also performed well. The Blumhouse sequel "Happy Death Day 2U", however, fell short of expectations.

The sci-fi actioner "Alita: Battle Angel" was the #1 movie at the box-office with a better-than-expected $27.8 million for the three-day weekend, and a total of $36.5 million since its release on Thursday. The film is expected to gross over $33 million for the four-day holiday weekend, which would raise the total earnings to around $40+ million. Internationally it brought in a total of $94.3 million since its release a week ago. However, the film cost $170 million to produce, so it needs over $500 million globally to break even. "Alita: Battle Angel" has received a lukewarm reception from critics (60 on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic), but a more positive response from moviegoers ("A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
In second place we find last week's #1 release, the animated film "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part", which has dropped over 37% and grossed $21.2 million over the weekend, with an expected four-day gross of $27 million. So, on Monday, the film's domestic total should end up at around $70 million. Overseas, the film has grossed another $12 million this weekend for a total of $34.7 million from 69 markets.
The romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic" starring Rebel Wilson landed in third place with $14.2 million and is expected to finish the extended holiday weekednd with $16.5 million. The film opened on Wednesday, so its total domestic gross for the six-day time frame should be around $23 million against a $31 million budget. The film received a mixed reception from both critics (68% on Rotten Tomatoes and 60 on Metacritic), and audiences ("B" grade from CinemaScore).
"What Men Want" finished its second weekend in theaters at #4 with $10.9 million, bringing its domestic total to $36.1 million against a $20 million budget. The film is expected to gross around $13 million for the four-day weekend.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the last of the new wide releases, the Blumhouse sequel "Happy Death Day 2U" which brought in $9.8 million over the three-day weekend and is expected to gross $11 million for the four-day time frame. The film opened on Wednesday and should end up with over $15 million for its first six days. Overall, the sequel fell behind expectations and really short of the original film's $26 million debut. Its saving grace is that it only cost $9 million to produce. "Happy Death Day 2U" received mostly mixed reviews from critics (67% on Rotten Tomatoes and 56 on Metacritic) and moviegoers had similar feelings about the movie ("B" grade from CinemaScore).
In other news, M. Night Shyamalan's "Glass" has crossed the $100 million, and "Aquaman" has become the second highest domestic DCEU release, behind "Wonder Woman" ($412.5 million).
