"Aquaman" is still topping the box-office charts in its third weekend and will soon cross the coveted $1 billion milestone. But even with the DC behemoth dominating the Top 10, the psychological thriller "Escape Room" managed a very surprising performance in its opening weekend.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
"Aquaman" has secured the top position for a third straight weekend with $30.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $259.7 million. Overseas the film grossed $56.2 million this weekend from 79 countries and its international tally has reached $681 million, the largest of any DC movie. When it finally crosses the $1 billion mark globally, it will surpass "The Dark Knight" and "The Dark Knight Rises" to become the highest ranking DC Comics adaptation worldwide. China leads the international markets with a total of $282.8 million.
In second place, the new wide release "Escape Room" pulled off a surprise debut, scoring $18 million from 2,717 theaters in its first weekend. The PG-13 film only cost $9 million to produce and seems to have offered audiences an alternative to the holiday season's big budget extravaganzas. "Escape Room" received mostly mixed reviews from critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic), but audiences responded more favorably to it (64% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B" from CinemaScore's polls).
Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns" fell to #3 with $15.7 million after a steeper-than-expected 44.4% drop. The film is expected to hold its position in the Top 5 throughout January, but if it keeps dropping like this, it will definitely fade away faster than anticipated. The sequel has reached a domestic tally of $138.7 million and also brought in a total of $119.2 million from overseas markets.
"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" finished in fourth place with $13 million, and the film has grossed $133.8 million domestically and $141.5 million overseas. Close behind, rounding out the Top 5, is Paramount's "Bumblebee" with $12.7 million. The Transformers spinoff has increased its international cume to $192 million after a solid $59.4 million debut in China this weekend.
