Everyone was expecting "The LEGO Movie 2" would make the difference at the box-office over the weekend, but while the film succeeded in topping the charts, it actually came in much lower than estimated. However, fellow new releases, "What Men Want" and "Cold Pursuit" performed better than expected and evened things out a bit.
Find out more about the weekend box-office after the jump.
Warner Bros' "The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part" opened in first place with $34.4 million, well below the $50+ million expected by the studio and most pundits. It's also the second lowest debut in the franchise, below the first film's $69 million and the $53 million debut of "The LEGO Batman Movie". The absolute lowest opening is the $20.4 million grossed by "The LEGO Ninjago Movie". Overseas the film is also underperforming with $18.1 million from 63 markets, compared to the first film's $18.4 million from only around 30 countries. The sequel has received a positive reception from both critics (84% from Rotten Tomatoes and 65 from Metacritic) and audiences ("A-" from CinemaScore).
In second place we find another new release, the comedy remake "What Men Want", which opened with $19 million from 2,912 theaters against a $20 million budget. The film has received a generally mixed-to-negative reception from critics (48% on Rotten Tomatoes and 51 on Metacritic) and CinemaScore reports a solid "A-" from their audience polls, despite the response being much more negative on other sites (52% on Rotten Tomatoes, 2.1 on Metacritic and 3.6 on IMDb).
The darkly comic revenge thriller "Cold Pursuit", another newcomer, opened in third place slightly ahead of expectations with $10.8 million. The Liam Neeson starrer received mixed-to-positive reviews from critics (74% on Rotten Tomatoes and 58 on Metacritic) and a pretty warm reception from moviegoers ("B-" from CinemaScore).
The dramedy "The Upside" continues to impress after dropping just 17% over the weekend. The film finished in fourth place with $7.2 million, which brings its domestic tally to $85.8 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by M. Night Shyamalan's "Glass" with $5.8 million. So far, the film has grossed $98.4 million domestically and $123 million overseas.
The last of the new wide releases, the horror film "The Prodigy" opened in sixth place with $6 million from 2,530 theaters against a $6 million budget. The film fell short of expectations, but that won't matter much now that the film has broken even.
New Wide Releases: "The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part", "What Men Want", "Cold Pursuit", "The Prodigy".
Biggest Drop : "Miss Bala" (-60%)
Smallest Drop : "The Upside" (-16.8%)
